1. DESIGN PHASE

Eligible Costs:


This section defines the eligible expenditures that qualify for reimbursement, including seismic retrofit design costs paid to California Licensed professionals (e.g., structural engineer, civil engineer, or architect) for producing and obtaining approval of seismic retrofit plans.
Project plans must be fully approved prior to building permit issuance to be eligible for Phase 1 reimbursement.


Ineligible Costs: 


  • Amounts paid to entities that are not California licensed professionals
  • Costs unrelated to the seismic retrofit design or that are outside the scope of the applicable Ordinance.
  • Design costs incurred prior to August 30, 2021
  • Design costs for projects that have not completed the building permit plan review process and have not obtained a building permit.


Steps to Apply for Design Grant


  1. Verify that the eligible structure does, in fact, require seismic retrofitting
  2. Select a Design Professional
  3. Apply for Design Grant Within Specified Time limit
  4. Building Permit Issuance: Construction Grant process (Phase 2) must begin within six months of building permit issuance.
